The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is a splendid a suggestive 15th Century Church right in the centre of Orta San Giulio. From the main square of town (Piazza Motta) a charming pedestrian cobbled road surrounded by magnificent historical palaces lead to the Church. From here you can enjoy a view that embraces the historic houses with pastel colors of Orta San Giulio, St. Julius island, the crown of the Alps..and the shimmering Lake Orta at your feet! The Church of Santa Maria Assunta was built in 1485 as a thank you by townsfolk who had survived the plague and it was partly modified in the 18th Century. Inside there are two aisles and a nave, divided by impressive columns. Precious paintings of great artistic and historical value adorned the interiors; in particular a painting by Procaccini depicting St. Charles Borromeo in Milan during the years of the plague, remarkable example of Italy XVII Century paintings.
