Your Catholic wedding in Ischia can be celebrated in almost all the beautiful churches of the island, but the most renowned one is the white-washed church on a promontory jutting into crystal sea-waters of astounding beauty. Founded in 1350, it was originaly the chapel of an Augustinian Monastery, but on the October of the 1653 it was abolished by the bull of Pope Innocenzo X. The current church was built in 1864 and it is considered the symbol of Ischia island. A double flight of stairs leads to the churchyard. Steps are in lavic stone and decorated with polychrome majolica tiles. The facade is pure white and adorned with precious majolica depicting saints. Its style is unmistikable: a graceful fusion of Greek-Byzantine, Moorish and Mediterranean architecture. Its simple interior is truly evocative: a single nave with three small side chapels, Corinthian pilasters and votive offerings of sailors. |
